About our Resources

A commitment to international standards is central to the SALRC's design. Where display of text in non-roman characters is required, the project uses Unicode. All electronic resources delivered over the Internet contain Dublin Core and other relevant metadata. Where bibliographic files are created the project follows the MARC 21 standard for records. The Open Archives Initiative technical framework is used to make project resources visible for discovery by readers.

Programmers deploy the latest technologies for SALRC's electronic resources making them and the Web site housing them compliant with the requirements of the Web Accessibility Initiative. The Web Accessibility Initiative addresses the needs of those with disabilities.

The Academic Technologies group of Networking Services and Information Technologies at the University of Chicago has established audio and video standards to help SALRC grantees and others who are developing web-based language applications as they create audio and video materials. <http://start.uchicago.edu/standards/index.html>
